“The rules are simple, just pick your favorite horror film for each day! However, you can’t pick the same horror film more [than] once. So once you pick say THE EXORCIST for your favorite horror film involving the powers of Hell, you can’t [pick] it again for any other day [whatsoever,] including favorite horror film.”

Day 20 – Your favorite horror film involving a killer animal
Film: The Fly (1986) – dir. David Cronenberg

David Cronenberg is a director that I desperately need to watch more of, which is why he was listed as one of my goals for the year.  Unfortunately I haven’t had the opportunity to spend more quality time with Cronenberg’s works, but with my recent Criterion Collection Blu-ray purchase of Videodrome, that will be changing soon.

The Fly blew me away when I randomly watched it one night last year on Netflix Instant Queue.  Since then I have purchased it on BD, but haven’t gotten around to re-watching it.  This has to be the best effort I’ve seen from Jeff Goldblum, and one of the best special effects jobs I’ve seen in any film.  As Goldblum turns more and more into the giant fly, the effects manage to get more grotesque.  This is a prime example of why real makeup will forever trump CGI.  If you haven’t seen The Fly, I feel sorry for you.
